Understanding the Nairobi Securities Exchange — A Beginners Guide

Maertin K | May 19, 2026 | 1 min read
The NSE offers Kenyan investors access to some of the most profitable companies in East Africa. Here is everything you need to know to get started.

What Is the NSE

Kenya's principal stock exchange, established in 1954. It lists over 60 companies across banking, manufacturing, telecommunications, insurance, and real estate.

How It Works

When you buy shares, you purchase a small ownership stake in a company. If the company performs well, the value of your shares increases. Many companies also pay dividends.

How to Open a CDS Account

You need a Central Depository System account to trade. Open one through a licensed stockbroker with your national ID and bank account details.

Key Metrics

Price-to-Earnings ratio, dividend yield, market capitalization, and earnings per share are the basic metrics every NSE investor should understand.
